Garmin has unveiled its most advanced smartwatch to date, the Fēnix® 8 Pro MicroLED, claiming the title of the brightest smartwatch available. This new device features an impressive touchscreen made up of more than 400,000 individual LEDs, capable of producing a luminosity of up to 4,500 NITs, making it significantly brighter than competitors like the Apple Watch Series 11, which boasts 2,000 NITs, and exceeding the Super Retina XDR display of the latest iPhone by 50%.

The new Fēnix series consists of the Fēnix 8, Fēnix 8 Pro, and Fēnix E models, which utilise the traditional AMOLED technology alongside a newly introduced Fēnix 8 Solar. This model is designed to harness solar energy, extending its battery life up to 28 days in smartwatch mode. Each variant comes in various sizes, including 43mm, 47mm, and 51mm, with choices of titanium or slate grey DLC steel for the entry-level Fēnix E, priced at £599.

A notable advancement in the Fēnix 8 Pro and MicroLED versions is the incorporation of inReach® technology, enabling satellite and cellular connectivity independent of smartphones. This feature is especially critical for outdoor enthusiasts who require reliable communication and location sharing in remote environments.

Garmin’s vice president of consumer sales and marketing, Susan Lyman, highlighted the significance of this new lineup, stating, “Fēnix 8 Pro is changing the game for smartwatches. This new lineup is full of breakthrough innovations, bringing life-changing inReach technology to the wrist to help keep athletes and adventurers in touch with their family and friends and introducing the first-ever ultra-bright MicroLED display to a smartwatch so users can see their maps, stats, health and wellness metrics and more like never before.”

Garmin’s history of evolving its smartwatch technology is evident in the Fēnix series, which has consistently addressed consumer demands for enhanced display quality and multifunctionality. The large touchscreen, particularly in the 51mm model, ensures that users can view essential information such as weather data, maps, and performance metrics, mimicking the capabilities of a smartphone.

The Fēnix 8 series encompasses a full suite of features focusing on performance tracking, health monitoring, navigation, and communication, including endurance scores, sleep tracking, preloaded TopoActive maps, and safety protocols. The Fēnix 8 Pro – AMOLED is available in 47mm and 51mm sizes with a battery life of up to 27 days in smartwatch mode, starting at £1,029.99, while the Fēnix 8 Pro – MicroLED, currently priced at £1,729.99, offers a battery life of up to 10 days in similar conditions.

Garmin has been at the forefront of sports technology since launching its first wearable for athletes in 2003, the Forerunner 201, which provided real-time pace and distance metrics. Over the years, the company has introduced several iterations, including the heart rate-monitoring Forerunner 305 and the Forerunner 310XT, which combined tracking capabilities across multiple sports.

The introduction of the Fēnix line in 2012 marked a milestone, incorporating a watch-like design with enhanced multisport tracking. Subsequent models, including the Quatix for marine navigation, and the Epix collection with AMOLED displays, have broadened Garmin’s appeal to both athletes and casual users.

With a commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its users, Garmin’s smartwatch offerings now include robust outdoor and lifestyle features, catering to a diverse consumer base while maintaining a focus on functionality for those engaged in sports and adventure activities.
