Established jewellery brands often grapple with the challenge of balancing their rich heritage with the desire to explore innovative designs. Italian brand Repossi, however, has navigated this challenge adeptly, driven by the vision of its creative director, Gaia Repossi. By exploring the intersections of jewellery, art, architecture, and fashion, Repossi has cultivated a unique identity, recently exemplified by a collaboration with American-Dutch artist Sterling Ruby.
Having known each other for nearly ten years, Repossi and Ruby found their partnership a seamless fit. “We had met several times through Raf (Simons) and I of course always loved his work – to me he is the perfect American new minimalist artist after the past generation of Judd or Ed Ruscha,” Repossi remarked. She expressed admiration for Ruby’s ability to embody a modern interpretation of minimalism, describing him as “one of the most interesting artists in LA.” Ruby adds, “The Repossi approach to jewellery design is architectural, minimalist, but also open to disruption – that openness is what drew me in.”
The collaboration birthed a striking brooch, characterized by its constructivist silhouette. This piece is made from 18-carat champagne gold, drawing inspiration from Ruby’s REIF series of wall-mounted sculptures, which elevate ordinary forms into something remarkable.
“My role with a collaboration is to express the idea of the artist and the collaborator and turn it into a jewel, obviously with my own take and vision,” Repossi stated. She highlighted that the fusion of their ideas is what renders the collaboration particularly intriguing. “As a designer, my main goal is to reinvent classics, twist ideas, and make new classics. In this particular case, we transformed one of Sterling’s recent sculpture series into a perfect reflective jewel, a unique piece made into limited editions.”
