The ASEAN Gems & Jewellery Trade Association (AGJA) and the Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association (HKJJA) celebrated a significant partnership during the HKJJA’s 60th anniversary, hosting the 2025 AGJA Conference at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event brought together a diverse group of international delegates, industry leaders, and innovators, demonstrating the increasing significance of ASEAN in the global jewellery marketplace.
The collaboration between AGJA and HKJJA has evolved over many years, founded on a shared vision and mutual growth aspirations. The Diamond Jubilee of HKJJA served as an ideal backdrop to reaffirm their commitment to harmonising their respective roles — with Hong Kong as a central trading hub and ASEAN as a burgeoning market. This alliance aims to generate fresh opportunities for businesses, suppliers, and designers across the region.
Mr. Victor Chan, Chairman of HKJJA, Mr. Benedict Sin, President & Director of HKJJA, and Mr. Suttipong Damrongsakul, AGJA President, delivered opening remarks that set a positive tone for the day’s proceedings. The first discussion, moderated by Mr. Lawrence Ma, the Founding President of the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, featured noteworthy insights from industry leaders including Mr. Charles Ho Nai Chuen from Singapore, Mr. Ermin Siow from Malaysia, Mr. Simon Chan representing the China Gems & Jade Exchange, and Ms. Le Yen from the Vietnam Gemstone Jewelry & Art Crafts Association. Their dialogue centred on the potential for a cohesive ASEAN jewellery network leveraging Hong Kong’s expertise in design and trade alongside the abundant resources and creativity found within ASEAN.
The second panel, overseen by Mr. Kent Wong, Chairman of The Jewellers’ and Goldsmiths’ Association of Hong Kong, included contributions from Mr. Alan Chan of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group and Mr. Terry Li from Tencent Smart Retail. Discussions focused on the transformative impact of digital technology on industry efficiency, growth opportunities, and profitability.
Comprising over 600 million predominantly young and digitally savvy individuals, ASEAN represents one of the fastest-growing jewellery markets globally. Businesses increasingly regard this region as a strategic entry point to a diverse consumer base, while buyers acknowledge it as a crucial source of gemstones, raw materials, and innovative design talent. Thailand remains a key player in the coloured gemstone sector, with Vietnam, Myanmar, and Indonesia further contributing to the region’s rich resource landscape. The increasing demand for gold across ASEAN also provides avenues for innovative designs that merge traditional and modern aesthetics in response to changing consumer preferences.
The successful hosting of the AGJA Conference affirms the shared commitment between the AGJA and HKJJA to enhance ASEAN’s role in the global jewellery industry. The event not only highlighted historical collaborations but also paved the way for a vibrant and interconnected future within the jewellery sector worldwide.
