A recent trade deal between the United Kingdom and Switzerland aims to facilitate travel for British citizens and bolster trade in services between the two nations. Notably, UK passport holders will gain access to e-gate facilities at Swiss airports for the first time.
Trade Secretary Peter Kyle characterised the agreement as “the most significant services trade deal the UK has ever negotiated.” It will eliminate mobile roaming fees for both leisure and business travellers crossing between the UK and Switzerland.
British travellers can expect to start using e-gates at Zurich Airport by the end of this year, with Geneva and Basel airports set to implement the system on their own schedules. This agreement operates independently of Switzerland’s future integration into the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which will also allow UK citizens to use e-gates in various EU countries.
The UK government anticipates that this new arrangement could boost British exports to Switzerland by £5.2 billion annually over time. Currently, Switzerland ranks as the UK’s sixth-largest export market for services, with the two nations engaging in services trade exceeding £30 billion in 2025.
An important aspect of the deal is the extension of a pre-existing mobility framework, enabling businesses to deliver services in Switzerland for 90 days without needing a work permit. This arrangement, which was previously set to expire in 2029, will now continue indefinitely.
Furthermore, UK personnel will be allowed to relocate to Switzerland for up to five years without facing rigorous economic needs assessments, a development likely to benefit legal, accounting, and architectural sectors.
Each year, approximately 800,000 British tourists visit Switzerland, while Swiss citizens already enjoy e-gate access at UK airports.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer commented on the significance of this new agreement, stating: “Whether you’re growing a business or travelling for work, this agreement is about making life easier and creating more opportunity for people across the UK. It means British firms will find it easier to sell their expertise in one of our most important markets in Europe, supporting jobs and investment here at home.”
This announcement follows a series of recent trade arrangements between the UK and other countries, including the United States, India, the Gulf Cooperation Council, South Korea, and the EU.
In a separate context, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander met with European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, to discuss preparations for the upcoming EES. Both parties have committed to collaborating to ensure that EES checks run as smoothly as possible ahead of the busy summer travel season.
