Rolex has been named the brand with the highest incidence of counterfeit watches seized at US borders, according to recent data from US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The Rolex Submariner, reference 126610LN, ranks first in the fiscal year 2024 report, which spans from 1 October 2023 to 30 September 2024.

Every confiscated fake Submariner represents a missed sales opportunity for authentic models, which retail for approximately $11,350 in the US and can fetch around $16,000 in the secondary market, according to EveryWatch.

Following closely in second place is the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, reference 116500LN, which retailed for $15,100 before its discontinuation in 2023. Current market prices for this iconic watch have now skyrocketed to about $30,000.

Overall, the estimated potential value of counterfeit watches seized in the fiscal year 2024 amounts to $1.44 billion, with counterfeit jewellery making up a slightly higher total at $1.65 billion. In addition to watches, the CBP reported seizing a staggering 32.3 million items, amounting to a total potential value of $5.42 billion if they were genuine.

Further analysis reveals that 90% of the counterfeit goods were sourced from China, valued at around $4.1 billion if legitimate, while items from Hong Kong accounted for an estimated value of $0.9 billion.

CBP not only highlights the leading counterfeit watches but also offers guidance on identifying these fraudulent products.

### Identifying the Most Counterfeited Watches

1. **Rolex Submariner (ref. 126610LN)**
The Submariner is widely regarded as the most replicated watch globally, with counterfeiters improving their techniques over decades. Key indicators of authenticity include the quality of the bezel insert and the 2.5x magnification of the date cyclops lens, which counterfeit models often fail to replicate accurately.

2. **Rolex Daytona (ref. 116500LN)**
This model’s popularity results in a high prevalence of fakes, particularly due to its limited availability. Subdial printing is a crucial area where counterfeit versions often falter, alongside the quality of the engraving and the integration of crown guards with the case.

3. **Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (ref. 15500ST)**
The distinctive design of the Royal Oak makes it a prime target for imitation. Genuine watches feature perfectly aligned screws, and the tapisserie dial pattern should show fine, three-dimensional detail that is often poorly replicated in counterfeits.

4. **Patek Philippe Nautilus (ref. 5711/1A)**
Due to its high market demand, the Nautilus poses significant risks for buyers without authentication. Authentic models boast a precise alternating finish on the dial, while counterfeit versions often exhibit a uniform appearance.

5. **Rolex GMT-Master II (ref. 126710BLRO)**
Known colloquially as the “Pepsi,” this model’s complex ceramic bezel is difficult to imitate, with genuine pieces showcasing a clear line between colours. Counterfeits frequently show gradient blurring in this detail.

6. **Richard Mille RM 011**
The unique design elements of Richard Mille watches make them challenging to counterfeit. Authentic models feature specific materials and detailing that often cannot be accurately mirrored in lower-quality versions.

7. **Breitling Navitimer (ref. AB0138)**
The Navitimer’s functional slide rule bezel is a frequent weak spot for counterfeiters. Genuine markings are laser-sharp and recessed, whereas fakes often rely on superficial printing.

8. **Rolex Day-Date (ref. 228238)**
The “President” is a desirable target for counterfeiters due to its association with luxury status. Authentic day displays should be crisply printed, while fake versions often suffer from poor text quality.

9. **Omega Speedmaster Professional (“Moonwatch”)**
The Speedmaster’s long-standing legacy allows counterfeiters ample opportunity to study and replicate its features. Key indicators of authenticity include the quality of the hesalite crystal and the visible movement through the caseback.

10. **Patek Philippe Grand Complications (ref. 5270G)**
The Grand Complications model features intricate mechanisms that are difficult to reproduce convincingly. The guilloche dial pattern and the functionality of its perpetual calendar are critical aspects that set genuine watches apart from counterfeits.

As counterfeit practices evolve, these insights remain essential for potential buyers and enthusiasts to ensure they invest in genuine timepieces.
