The Goldsmiths’ Centre has appointed Julia Balchin as interim director, with her tenure set to commence in March 2026. Balchin comes to the role from the Royal Drawing School, where she acted as principal, guiding the charity through a period of significant growth.
Previously, Balchin dedicated 15 years to the Prince’s Charities, focusing on arts education related to skills development and the preservation of crafts. This background is expected to enhance the Centre’s vocational training initiatives.
The Goldsmiths’ Centre, which provides technical education and business support for emerging jewellers and silversmiths, has undergone notable advancements under the prior leadership of Peter Taylor. Taylor is recognised for developing the Centre’s existing training and professional development structure tailored to artisans in this field.
Balchin expressed her enthusiasm for the new position: “I am honoured to take up the role – Peter leaves an indelible legacy – the work of the Goldsmiths’ Centre has been transformational for so many young silversmiths and jewellers, who are the future of the trade. What is most inspiring at the Goldsmiths’ Centre is the understanding that nurturing and training the next generation requires so much more than teaching alone – professional development, affordable workshops, employment or business startup support are of equal importance for success in today’s world.”
Annie Warburton, chief executive and clerk of the Goldsmiths’ Company, remarked on the importance of specialized skills in the industry, noting that “The highly specialised skills required in our industry take years to master. They are built upon equally specialised training. Under Peter Taylor’s leadership, the Goldsmiths’ Centre has transformed how we nurture the next generation of jewellers and silversmiths, ensuring these vital skills endure.” Balchin’s appointment is seen as a pivotal moment for the Centre as it seeks to further its mission of fostering talent within the jewellery and silversmithing professions.
