Paul Thurlow has announced his retirement after a remarkable 50-year career in the British watch and jewellery sector, with the last 25 years spent at the helm of Oris in the UK.
Beginning his journey in the industry as a trainee manager at H Samuel in Stockton-on-Tees in 1976, Mr Thurlow joined Oris in 1999. Reflecting on his career in a 2013 interview with WatchPro’s Hot 100 book, he expressed a desire to transition to the watch segment of the trade earlier but faced challenges as potential employers were hesitant to consider someone from a retail background for wholesale positions.
Stable leadership is essential for independent watch brands like Oris, which rely on the cultivation of enduring relationships with their retail partners. Oris’s announcement regarding his retirement highlighted Mr Thurlow’s significant role in establishing these trusted connections.
His colleagues at Oris praised Mr Thurlow’s supportive and collaborative approach, combined with his extensive knowledge of the brand. In their statement, they remarked on his lasting influence within the industry, noting, “As a brand representative he has been known for his supportive, collaborative approach and deep knowledge of the brand, making a lasting impact in the industry. In light of his departure, several colleagues and business acquaintances have expressed their gratitude for his contributions over the years. Mark Toulson, recently retired head buyer at Watches of Switzerland Group, stated, “It was always a pleasure to deal with you and your knowledge and professionalism will be missed by the trade. Retirement is pretty magical though, so enjoy yourself!”
Adam Obernik, who serves as the watch and jewellery buyer at Fraser Hart & Fields, affirmed, “Well deserved Paul, we’ve shared some great times together, enjoy the rest.”
VJ Geronimo, CEO of Oris America, reflected on Mr Thurlow’s warm welcome when he joined the brand, saying, “Paul, it has been a lot of years and it has been an absolute pleasure working with you.
