Full Story

Oris has re-established its collaboration with Swiss leather artisan Cervo Volante to introduce a new eco-friendly variant of its popular Big Crown Pointer Date watch.

Typically, a product review does not commence with the strap, yet in this instance, it is undoubtedly a standout feature—crafted from sustainably sourced Swiss deer leather.

Cervo Volante has built its reputation on revolutionising deer hides, which are a natural by-product of Switzerland’s stringent population control initiatives, into premium leather items. The company employs traditional vegetable tanning methods to transform what was once regarded as waste into valuable materials, with the scars and marks from the deer’s Alpine existence lending a unique character to each skin.

This approach avoids breeding programmes, employs no harmful chemicals, and seeks to minimise environmental impact. In fact, it promotes biodiversity by reducing deer populations, thereby aligning with the sensibilities of modern eco-aware consumers who are increasingly critical of greenwashing.

While some may find it difficult to reconcile the use of deer leather with imagery of wildlife, this method stands in stark contrast to problematic practices seen in the exotic leather industry.

Encased in a 40mm stainless steel housing, the watch features Oris’s renowned Calibre 754 automatic movement, noted for its accuracy and a power reserve of 41 hours. The design includes a green-tipped pointer date hand, a domed sapphire crystal, and Super-LumiNova cathedral hands that enhance its vintage appeal.

The eye-catching chestnut brown strap pairs beautifully with a burnt maple dial that transitions to a flame red centre, evoking the comforting feeling of a fireside gathering.

Additionally, each watch is packaged with a matching deer leather travel pouch.

Priced at CHF 2,250, further details can be found at oris.ch.
