Full Story
The allure of A. Lange & Söhne first captivated me through a feature on the Datograph, where esteemed watchmaker Philippe Dufour hailed it as the finest chronograph movement ever crafted. Although I had a foundational understanding of luxury watchmaking, first introduced to it in my childhood in Aspen, Colorado, I knew little of Lange or Dufour. Yet, this remarkable timepiece drew me in with its mystique.
Watches often evoke powerful imagery tied to the lifestyles and destinations associated with them. For watch enthusiasts, there is typically one brand—or even one specific watch—that epitomises their horological dreams. For many, including myself, that brand is A. Lange & Söhne.
I recently visited Aspen for the second annual Watch Week and eagerly seized the chance to wear one of the renowned German company’s creations. Faced with various selections, I chose the Lange 1 Time Zone, which seemed perfectly suited to my travel and the atmosphere of Aspen.
Familiar readers of Hodinkee may recall Ben’s detailed 2012 exploration of the Lange 1 Time Zone Luminous, providing a snapshot of a vastly different watch industry and reflecting a pivotal time for Lange as a brand. Today, however, Lange has firmly established itself, shedding any previous doubts and comparisons with Swiss counterparts. Its reputation as one of the world’s premier watchmakers is now indisputable.
Over the past few years, the Lange 1 Time Zone has witnessed significant updates since its 2005 debut, particularly with the movement’s upgrade to Caliber L 141.1 in 2020. While the alterations might appear minimal at first, they significantly enhance readability.
The repositioning of day/night indicators directly beneath the time zone hands creates a more streamlined and less overwhelming dial. When the hour hand covers the blue crescent, it signals PM for the respective time zone. This adjustment yields a cleaner look, harmonising efficiency and elegance, showcasing the brand’s signature German craftsmanship.
Additionally, a new feature has been added to the smaller subdial at 5 o’clock, with a window indicating Daylight Saving Time in either red or white. This practical touch underscores the Lange 1 Time Zone’s usefulness for frequent travellers, combining practicality with a refined appearance. I wore the timepiece with casual attire—a polo shirt and hiking trousers—and found it complemented my style effortlessly.
On the left side of the case are two discreet pushers: the upper engages the signature outsize date, while the lower manages the time adjustment for the travel subdial. The pushers are seamlessly integrated, forgotten on the wrist until needed. With the crown in the second position, a light press on the lower pusher synchronises the two hour hands, making setting the time incredibly simple.
Wearing an A. Lange & Söhne watch is an exceptional experience. Before anything else, one is compelled to admire the movement through the exhibition case back of the Lange 1 Time Zone, showcasing a visually stunning array of German silver, blued screws, and intricate hand engravings. The 42mm size is comfortable and conforms well to the wrist, even for those with slimmer sizes.
The watch’s solid, yet unobtrusive gold case offers an ideal balance despite the complexity of its two subdials and the presence of a power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock. Its visual appeal belies its actual size, creating an atmosphere of quiet luxury.
Upon arriving at Denver Airport, I felt a wave of nostalgia looking down at my wrist. I was struck by how effortlessly I was able to set the time—no mental arithmetic or GMT calculations required—just simple clicks that aligned the watch with my intended time zone.
Aspen is not just significant due to my upbringing; it is also where I first discovered the world of fine watches at Meridian Jewelers, located next to Lange’s boutique.
The best watches carry personal significance, and despite it not being owned by me, the Lange 1 Time Zone embodies that meaning. For years, A. Lange & Söhne has represented the pinnacle of horology for me, often serving as my answer in discussions about the ultimate watch one might desire. This sentiment is widely shared among aficionados.
Though I generally disregard external opinions regarding my watch choices, wearing a Lange in the company of fellow enthusiasts is undeniably gratifying. The customary admiration and inquiries into my wristpiece create an atmosphere akin to being the centre of attention. Even within the luxurious setting of Aspen, surrounded by exquisite timepieces from premier collections, the Lange 1 Time Zone consistently garnered admiration.
The Lange 1’s design is fundamental to A. Lange & Söhne and embodies the essence of German watchmaking. The addition of the time zone complication elevates this piece, distinguishing it as particularly special among its peers. Its combination of user-friendliness, understated elegance, and practical features positions the Lange 1 Time Zone as perhaps the finest travel watch available, or at the very least, the most aesthetically pleasing.
