In December, Sotheby’s New York will auction a remarkable array of 30 Patek Philippe luxury sports watches from a single private collector, primarily sourced from Tiffany & Co. This exclusive collection represents a rare opportunity for bidders, particularly those in the technology sector, with pre-sale estimates suggesting a potential sale price of around $9 million or approximately 110 Bitcoins.
Among the highlights of this auction, two timepieces are making their debut on the auction circuit: the Patek Philippe Reference 5374/300P Grand Complication Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar and the Reference 5260/355R Aquanaut Luce Rainbow Minute Repeater. These pieces exemplify the strong relationship between the collector and retailer, showcasing a collection that has an unbroken chain of ownership from acquisition to sale.
Leigh Safar, Sotheby’s global head of important watch collections, emphasizes the significance of the collection’s provenance: “Built over many years with extraordinary focus and discernment, the collection brings together some of the most sought-after modern Patek Philippe references.” She notes that the continuity of ownership enhances the authenticity of these pieces, which not only serve as remarkable timepieces but also embody the narratives tied to their collectors.
The auction will feature several standout items. The top lot by estimate is not a sports model but rather a dazzling diamond-studded grand complication. The Patek Philippe Reference 5374/300P-001, with an estimated value between $2.5 million and $5 million, is a platinum automatic minute repeating perpetual calendar wristwatch that showcases Patek Philippe’s mastery of high jewellery and horology.
Another exceptional piece is the Patek Philippe Reference 5260/355R, introduced in 2023. This Aquanaut model integrates the athletic character of the series with intricate watchmaking traditions. It features a vivid array of baguette-cut sapphires and diamonds and carries a pre-sale estimate ranging from $1.4 million to $2.8 million.
Additionally, the Reference 5208R-001, a pink gold automatic minute repeater with a perpetual calendar, is set to be auctioned with a value estimate of $900,000 to $1.8 million. Known for its complex mechanisms, it encapsulates Patek Philippe’s exceptional craftsmanship.
The collection also includes Patek Philippe pieces adorned with the Tiffany & Co. signature. Notably, the Reference 5164G-001 Aquanaut Travel Time combines practicality with elegance, estimated between $150,000 and $300,000. Meanwhile, the highly coveted Nautilus Reference 5711/1A-018, a historical collaboration celebrating the partnership between the two prestigious brands, may fetch between $1 million and $1.6 million.
One of the newest designs, the Reference 5821/1AR-001 Cubitus, showcases innovation in Patek Philippe’s repertoire while remaining true to its stylish heritage. This pink gold and stainless steel piece is estimated between $150,000 and $300,000 and marks the first Tiffany-signed Cubitus offered in an auction.
The Original Owner Collection will be auctioned on December 7 as part of Sotheby’s Important Watches sale, presenting a unique opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike to acquire extraordinary pieces that embody both luxury and legacy.
