Independent watchmaking was prominently featured in New York last week as the INDIES.NYC event attracted 25 watchmakers from nine different countries, along with 700 collectors, journalists, and industry professionals. This marked the fourth edition of the event.

Taking place in a discreet location in Manhattan’s Flatiron District during New York Watch Week, the six-hour gathering diverged from traditional watch fairs, which often showcase lavish booths and aggressive sales tactics. At INDIES.NYC, enthusiasts had the unique opportunity to interact directly with the makers, examine their intricate creations up close, and engage in discussions about the craftsmanship involved.

The event showcased a mix of renowned watchmakers such as Stepan Sarpaneva, Marco Tedeschi, and Nicolas Delaloye, alongside emerging talents like Jean Khatchadourian, Manteio, and Bradley Taylor. Notably, there was an emphasis on increasing female representation in the industry, with three female watchmakers—Annelinde Dunselman, Marie Kallinich, and Jessica Pieters—being given special recognition.

The venue’s design was intentionally minimalistic for this year’s event. In contrast to the darker, more exclusive atmosphere of the previous year, the 2026 event featured an industrial aesthetic that highlighted the authenticity of both the artisans and their timepieces.

Tony Traina of Unpolished remarked on the atmosphere, saying, “As soon as I walked in, the vibe at INDIES.NYC felt different. It was loud, casual, and a drink somehow found my hand almost immediately. But the watchmaking was serious.” He further noted the exceptional quality of the participating watchmakers, stating, “More than anything, the concentration of watchmaking that INDIES.NYC pulled together was exceptional. It’s a testament to the team – all the exhibitors felt handpicked and thoughtfully chosen.”

In addition to the showcase, INDIES.NYC continued its “1% for the Next Generation” initiative, where participating artisans contribute to watchmaking education. The event is set to return on April 22, 2027, with applications now open for independent artisan watchmakers interested in taking part in future events.
