For nearly 70 years, the Omega Speedmaster has established a narrative that few timepieces can match. On 9 September, an event at Omega’s boutique in The Dubai Mall celebrated this remarkable history, inviting visitors to delve into the watch’s storied past and the models that have contributed to its iconic status.
The event featured an engaging exhibition that showcased the Speedmaster’s development, tracing its journey from a precision chronograph intended for terrestrial use to its pivotal role in the storied Apollo space missions.
Instead of merely depicting a chronological summary of the collection, the exhibition highlighted numerous critical models of the Speedmaster, allowing attendees to appreciate the evolution of its design while recognising the hallmarks that have solidified its reputation as one of the world’s most celebrated chronographs.
Each timepiece, showcasing variations from case designs to dial modifications, contributed to the ongoing tale of the Speedmaster. Collectively, they demonstrated the collection’s growth while maintaining the foundational characteristics established by its early iterations.
The exhibition also illuminated the Speedmaster’s shift from a specialist racing chronograph to a symbol of exploration. The evening concluded with the debut of seven new 38mm Speedmaster references, which present a closer relationship to the famed Moonwatch’s aesthetic than ever before.
These latest models feature rounded subdials, departing from the previous oval design, which enhances their sporty character. Furthermore, the dials exhibit a streamlined appearance with minimized text, and the bezels include the Dot-Over-Ninety detail, a hallmark of Moonwatch heritage.
The timepieces are elegantly finished with a classic five-link bracelet style, alternating between polished and brushed centre links depending on the specific reference.
Two self-winding Co-Axial movements power the collection, with Calibre 3330 used for six date-display models, while Calibre 3332 drives a version featuring a sleek black dial without a date function.
Raynald Aeschlimann, Omega’s president and CEO, remarked: “The Speedmaster 38 mm has always taken its cues from the Moonwatch, while keeping size, colour, and simplicity in mind.”
He further stated, “With this latest update, we’ve taken the Moonwatch inspiration even further, enriching the Speedmaster DNA while retaining the refined nature that the 38 mm range is known for.”
The exhibition in Dubai serves as a powerful reminder that the allure of the Speedmaster lies not in isolated milestones but within the rich tapestry of history accumulated over nearly seven decades.
