Full Story

Ming Thein, the founder of Ming, has introduced a new brand named Donut Watch Company, marking a significant step into a more accessible segment of the watch market. This “diffusion line” aims to offer the brand’s unique design ethos at a lower price point.

While Donut Watch Company is expected to embody much of the distinctive design characteristics familiar to Ming enthusiasts, Thein asserts that it will not merely be a less expensive version of the original brand. Customers are likely to see features such as sculptural lugs and innovative dial designs, in addition to a focus on the play of light through the use of sapphire and various transparent materials.

The inaugural model from this new venture is called The Glazed, a compact 35mm automatic timepiece. It boasts a polished stainless steel case and the signature flying-blade lugs previously seen in Ming’s offerings. The watch’s dial showcases a blend of creativity and craftsmanship that exceeds expectations for a piece priced under £700.

Its frosted translucent design allows a glimpse of the Japanese automatic movement housed within. Alongside a luminous hour ring, the innovative layering creates a striking interaction with light—elements that have come to define the Ming aesthetic. Additionally, it features a distinctive running-seconds indicator at five o’clock that changes colour as it moves.

The watch is rated for water resistance up to 50 metres and is presented on a grey NATO-style strap. Despite its playful name, Donut Watch Company does not intend to launch whimsical designs inspired by sugary treats; the only nod to this theme is its doughnut-shaped presentation case.

At present, The Glazed watches are not available for purchase or official launch. The brand’s social media presence and website exist primarily to gauge interest from potential buyers. Currently, the watches are being circulated among collectors and journalists as prototype promotional items. Once Donut Watch Company is ready for public sale, variations in colour options are anticipated, though a final retail price and launch date are yet to be disclosed, with a goal set to keep the price below £700.
