The National Association of Jewellers (NAJ), along with the UK’s four Assay Offices, has expressed approval following the Department for Business and Trade’s acknowledgment of the significance of hallmarking in the jewellery sector.
In a collaborative letter from the NAJ and the Assay Offices advocating for updates to the 1973 Hallmarking Act, Kate Dearden MP, the Minister for Employment Rights and Consumer Protection, affirmed that hallmarking not only protects consumers but also promotes fair competition within the industry. Proposed reforms include clearer definitions relevant to online sales, the establishment of digital listings as formal “offers to sell,” extending liability to online marketplaces, and enhancing enforcement measures in the digital arena.
The NAJ noted that the government is committed to grounding any future recommendations in reliable evidence and insights provided by both the association and the Assay Offices.
Ben Massey, CEO of the NAJ, remarked on the positive engagement with the Minister, stating: “We are pleased to receive such a constructive and encouraging response from the Minister. The UK hallmarking regime provides essential consumer protection, giving people confidence that the precious metal they are buying is exactly what it claims to be.”
Massey further stressed the necessity for the hallmarking system to adapt as international sellers increasingly engage with UK consumers. He emphasizes the importance of evolving the regulatory framework to ensure it remains effective and safeguards the public while fostering responsible business practices. The NAJ looks forward to collaborating with the Department for Business and Trade to ensure legislation aligns with contemporary market dynamics.
