Full Story
US President Donald Trump has suggested that both Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker should face imprisonment, alleging their failure to safeguard federal immigration enforcement officers. Trump expressed these views on his Truth Social platform, highlighting the escalating tensions surrounding immigration and the presence of federal forces in cities governed by Democrats.
In his post, Trump stated, “Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect ICE Officers! Governor Pritzker also!”, referencing officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) who operate within the city. His comments come in the wake of an executive order issued by Johnson that establishes city property as an “ICE Free Zone,” which limits the access of federal immigration agents to municipal resources. This order has been interpreted as a direct challenge to federal immigration efforts in Chicago.
The remarks contribute to an ongoing debate regarding the deployment of the National Guard in states led by Democrats. Recently, hundreds of Texas National Guard personnel have gathered near Chicago, despite strong objections from local leaders, including both Johnson and Pritzker. It is important to note that the administration has not formally charged either figure with any legal violations. Both Johnson and Pritzker have publicly opposed Trump’s immigration initiatives and labelled the federal government’s actions as overreaching. Pritzker has previously accused Trump of inciting discord to rationalise military actions.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that a majority of Americans disapprove of sending military troops to U.S. cities without clear external threats. In contrast, Trump has maintained his position on troop deployments, asserting on social media, “My goal is very simple. STOP CRIME IN AMERICA!”
The U.S. Department of Justice has raised concerns about what it describes as “domestic terrorism” occurring in certain cities. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche characterised the situation in Chicago as “literally domestic terrorism” during a recent appearance on Fox News.
Currently, a federal court has permitted the continued deployment of federal forces in Illinois, while a separate judicial ruling has halted similar actions in Portland, Oregon. Trump has suggested he may invoke the Insurrection Act, a legislation last employed during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, to circumvent potential legal challenges if deemed necessary.
This incident serves as a notable example of Trump’s persistent calls for the imprisonment of political adversaries, coinciding with his controversial strategy concerning military deployments.
