Full Story

The acquisition of a watch often requires consumers to balance between certainty and the thrill of chance. Buyers either select their desired model at a fixed price or opt for a mystery box, hoping for a pleasant surprise.

Watch Gang has introduced an innovative solution to mitigate the risks associated with such decisions. Their product, known as the Wheel, exemplifies the company’s vision within the watch market.

The concept is straightforward but stands out in practice. Customers can choose from various watch options across five tiers—four standard levels and an exclusive Grail piece, which represents their most coveted item. They pay a predetermined base price aligned with their chosen level 1 watch, rather than engaging in uncertain bidding.

The Wheel’s structure ensures that purchasers can count on receiving at least the watch corresponding to their selected tier, with the potential for receiving something even more valuable. “You spin the wheel, you either get that level 1 watch guaranteed, you don’t lose, or you get an upgrade from there,” explains Chad Tsagris, CEO of Watch Gang.

A unique aspect of the Wheel is its ‘floor’ concept. Unlike traditional mystery boxes, where buyers risk paying for a watch that might not meet their expectations, the Wheel guarantees at least the value of the level 1 watch. Tsagris likens this to entering a car dealership and paying for a Honda Civic but potentially driving away with a luxury vehicle, such as an Acura, Porsche, or Ferrari, at the Civic price.

This model alters the emotional calculus of watch purchasing. Collectors often face real risks in auctions and drops; by establishing a minimum value at the selected level, Watch Gang aims to shift the purchasing experience towards the excitement of potentially acquiring higher-value items, rather than facing the anxiety of receiving less.

The Wheel complements existing offerings rather than replacing them. Watch Gang continues to provide a subscription service, with weekly giveaways, including a TAG Heuer on Tuesdays, a Seiko on Saturdays, and a Rolex on Fridays. The Wheel caters to collectors seeking more control over their choices while still relishing the thrill of discovery.

The same strategy is applied in limited releases called level-up drops. These exclusive purchases, capped at hundreds, offer one random buyer a substantial upgrade, thus encouraging rapid purchases while allowing the company to manage exclusivity deliberately.

Items limited to 300 pieces create a different buying dynamic than open-ended listings, as the anticipation of winning an upgraded watch makes each drop an event worth paying attention to.

The real intrigue of the Wheel lies not in the timepieces themselves but in its transactional design. Watch Gang has merged elements that collectors value—certainty and surprise—into a cohesive model. Achieving this balance is a complex challenge and illustrates a more contemporary take compared to the traditional subscription boxes that first established the brand.

This innovation hints at the future of the industry, catering to buyers accustomed to drops, digital ownership, and interactive commerce who may be looking for more than just monthly subscription deliveries. The Wheel represents Watch Gang’s response to these evolving consumer expectations. The extent to which this approach influences the wider industry remains uncertain, but Watch Gang has effectively created a distinctive offering.

For a company that claims to be the world’s leading watch club, maintaining this unique proposition might be just as crucial as its overall size. The Wheel demonstrates that the company can still inject an element of surprise into a market where it already holds a commanding position.
