The CIBJO Ethics Commission has released its sixth Special Report in anticipation of the 2025 CIBJO Congress, set to take place in Paris on October 27, 2025. This comprehensive report, led by Sara Yood, addresses four essential aspects of business integrity within the jewellery and watch sectors: anti-money laundering measures, financial transparency, ethical marketing practices alongside the risks of greenwashing, consumer product integrity and disclosure, and the utilization of technology for enhanced transparency.
Ms. Yood stresses the paramount importance of maintaining integrity and transparency throughout the supply chain. “Today, no issue is more urgent than ensuring integrity and transparency across the supply chain,” she asserts, recognising that as consumer demands evolve and regulations become stricter, there is a pressing need for the industry to recommit to ethical practices that safeguard both businesses and consumers alike.
The report highlights the potential benefits of emerging technologies for bolstering the integrity of the jewellery sector. Ms. Yood notes that “Blockchain technology, for example, can provide tamper-proof records of provenance, while artificial intelligence (AI) may lead to greater consistency in grading and pricing.” However, she also warns of the challenges these technologies may present. “Blockchain systems rely on the accuracy of the data input. False or incomplete information at the source compromises the entire chain. AI systems, while efficient, may embed biases or lack transparency in their decision-making processes,” Ms. Yood cautions.
The President of the CIBJO Ethics Commission firmly states, “Integrity and transparency are not abstract ideals – they are necessities for the jewellery industry to continue to succeed.” She emphasizes that a lack of these principles could erode consumer trust, invite stricter regulatory measures, and diminish the symbolic value of the industry. Conversely, upholding these values allows jewellery to maintain its status as a timeless symbol of beauty and significance.
